Practical Wisdom: Kitchen as Temple and Hearth

A 30-Day Journey to Sacred Nourishment
After six months on the road, I’m within days of returning not just to the walls of my house, but to the heart of my being -- the heart that blesses, stirs, and honors the rhythms of my body. Surprisingly, after months of eating healthy food at a price so inexpensive it made no sense to cook, I’m thinking about the kitchen – the hearth of my home. How can I create a kitchen that is healthy and nourishing?
The truth is, the kitchen is a room I have little or no relationship with. For me, cooking has been a chore, so Mark cooks most of what we eat. Food has been utilitarian and my body a vessel to be pushed rather than praised. But now, a quiet voice within says, “It’s time for a change.”
It’s time to explore the kitchen in our home, not as a place of obligation, but as a temple of devotion. Time to make a meditation of my time there, to make preparation of food a prayer, to see spices as sacred expressions of the diversity of creation, and to see the blessings that can be created for myself, our family and friends.
Maybe you’d like to join me? What if your kitchen became a temple? What if your chopping board was an altar, your spoon a wand, your breath the blessing over every bite?
I’ve created a 30-day ritual of kitchen exploration for myself. Not for perfection or performance, but to “presence” myself in the kitchen as sacred space. Each day, I’ll read this list and choose one activity to help me shift into a different relationship with the space called “kitchen” and the things that happen there.
I plan to find pleasure in our kitchen – and to call forth sacred nourishment.
If you’d like to join me, we can awaken the soul of the sacred hearth together. Just print this pag and put it in your kitchen so its easy to see each day.
If you do this, I’d love to hear how its going for you! Your experiences will help encourage me.
Day 1: Return to the Hearth
Reflection Prompt: What part of me is returning home right now?
Ritual: Light a candle in your kitchen. Whisper a welcome: "I have returned. This space is sacred now." Place one hand on your heart and the other on your belly. Breathe into your body. Walk the perimeter of the kitchen, touching surfaces with reverence. Close with a bow.
Day 2: Cleanse the Temple
Reflection Prompt: What energy have I been carrying that is ready to be released?
