Practical Wisdom: Brave Living Begins

Practical Wisdom with Dr. Ahriana Platten

No matter what side of the political fence you stand on, the next four years will bring remarkable changes for us all. Even here, thousands of miles away in an entirely different country, I find myself inundated by the constant stream of social media stories, opinion pieces, and news updates from around the globe.

Tempting as it is to focus on the specifics of these events, my heart is pulled in another direction—to speak about exhaustion.

Exhaustion is a silent thief of our energy and spirit. Left unchecked, it can lead to burnout. The mix of concern, compassion fatigue, and the confusion of trying to stay informed while integrating so much information can leave us feeling weary, hopeless, or even apathetic.

Apathy is not the absence of care; it’s often the weight of too much caring, without the space to breathe.

After several years of writing and exchanging messages with many of you, I know the people who read this blog very well. You carry deep wisdom, a remarkable capacity for love, and a calling to bring light into the world. These qualities are needed now more than ever. Whether you welcome or resist the changes happening, one thing is certain: the process of transformation can be overwhelming. This is a marathon, not a sprint. And to go the distance, you must nurture yourself along the way.

You’ve spent years gathering spiritual tools to navigate times like these. Now is the moment to use them—to be a light for yourself, as much as for others. Here are some steps to help you care for your spirit and stay centered during these times of profound change:

1. Give Yourself Permission to Be Happy

In times of collective struggle, we can feel guilty for smiling, laughing, or finding moments of joy when others are suffering. But happiness is not betrayal—it’s healing. Laughter releases endorphins, reduces stress, and supports your physical and emotional well-being. When you allow yourself moments of joy, you replenish your strength and uplift those around you. Celebrate the small things—a kind word, a shared smile, the beauty of a sunrise. Watch a funny movie. These moments are uplifting and sacred. They remind you that life, in all its complexity, is still full of goodness.

2. Create Sacred Space for Rest

Set aside time each day to rest—not just physically, but spiritually. This could be lighting a candle, sitting quietly, or playing soft music. Rest is not the same as sleep. Rest is a time to quiet the mind. Let this be a time when you release the world’s noise and reconnect with your inner sanctuary. Rest is not an indulgence; it is replenishment.

3. Engage in Conscious Breathing

When the weight of the world feels heavy, pause and breathe deeply. Inhale peace; exhale worry. With each breath, remind yourself that you are part of a greater rhythm, one that is unfolding perfectly—even if it doesn’t yet make sense. I like to use a box breath. Breath in. Count to four. Breath out. Count to four. Repeat.

4. Practice Discernment with Media

Be mindful of what you allow into your mental and emotional space. Limit time spent scrolling through headlines or engaging in heated debates. Choose your sources wisely and remember --staying informed doesn’t mean consuming everything. Protect your energy by stepping back when needed.

5. Reconnect with the Natural World

Nature has a way of soothing our souls and reminding us of the enduring rhythms of life. Spend time outside, even if it’s just a few moments to watch the sky or feel the earth beneath your feet. Let nature ground you in its quiet wisdom. Listen. Look. Touch. Use your senses rather than your mind to connect to the natural world.

6. Give Yourself Permission to Feel

It’s okay to feel tired. It’s okay to grieve. Honor your emotions without judgment, knowing they are part of the process. Journaling, talking to a friend, or simply naming what you feel can help release the pressure and bring clarity.

7. Lean Into Your Spiritual Practices

Whether it’s meditation, prayer, chanting, or personal rituals, return to the practices that nourish your soul. Let them remind you of your connection to something greater, and let that connection replenish your hope. No earth-bound problem is greater than Source. Open to inspiration and guidance.

8. Offer Yourself Grace

This is not a time to demand perfection from yourself. Show yourself the same kindness and compassion you would offer a dear friend. Your best effort today might look different than yesterday, and that’s okay.

You are not alone in this journey. As the world shifts and stirs, your light is needed—not in its exhausted form, but in its most radiant, authentic brilliance. Self-care is not selfish; it is essential. You cannot pour from an empty cup, and your cup deserves to be full.

Take a moment today to honor your sacred self. Remember that caring for you is a powerful way to care for the world. Find joy, allow rest, embrace your emotions, and walk this path with the grace and light that only you can offer.

Radiate your light. The world needs it.
