Embracing Transformation at the Threshold of Change

Pracitcal Wisdom with Rev. Dr. Ahriana Platten

What an interesting life I’m living these days as I prepare to take a six-month spiritual journey across at least four countries --my own “Eat, Pray, Love” adventure! Mark and I will be in Mexico, Italy, Uganda, and Bali!

Everything seems to require my attention. Who will pick up mail, care for our sweet little pup, what needs to be fixed or adjusted at home before we go. And of course, lots of things will be completed for clients as well!

And we just went to Ireland to settle our son in college there…

And I just hosted and spoke at the Abundant-Soul conference this week…

And I’m doing a retreat for a beautiful group of women in Mexico in less than three weeks…

Whew!! It’s got me moving fast, feeling more anxious than I’d like, and using all my spiritual and emotional tools to calm and center myself. (Thank goodness I work well under pressure!)

Have you ever felt like life gets harder just when you're about to experience something deeply spiritual or transformative? This isn’t uncommon; in fact, it’s part of what’s often called a spiritual thresholding experience.

Thresholding refers to the challenges and resistance we encounter as we stand at the cusp of significant spiritual growth or transformation. Just like stepping through a physical doorway into a new space, crossing this threshold invites us into unknown territory. However, the journey to transformative space often feels difficult because we’re being called to shed old patterns and open more deeply to the changes ahead.

During this process, it may feel as though life is throwing obstacles in your way. These challenges aren’t meant to push you away from your spiritual path; rather, they’re there to help you expand, break through limitations, and allow the deeper wisdom of your soul to emerge. The threshold is a test of sorts—one that helps prepare you to fully embrace the spiritual shifts you’re about to experience.

Five Ways to Move Through a Spiritual Thresholding Experience

Embrace Stillness

When you find yourself in the midst of a thresholding moment, it can feel chaotic. But instead of reacting to the external noise, take time to sit in stillness. This allows you to center yourself and reconnect with your inner calm, which can help ease the intensity of the experience. Meditation or quiet contemplation provides space for your spirit to realign with the divine flow.

Let Go of Old Patterns

Thresholding often brings up resistance because we are still holding onto old beliefs, habits, or fears that no longer serve us. Take this opportunity to reflect on what you may be clinging to. Journaling can help you identify those attachments and consciously release them. Trust that letting go will open the door for new spiritual insights.

Seek Support from Your Community

Leaning on others for spiritual and emotional support during a thresholding experience is not a sign of weakness but an act of wisdom. Whether it’s through a trusted friend, a spiritual group, or a mentor, sharing your experience can provide new perspectives and the comfort of knowing you're not alone in your journey.

Acknowledge Your Emotions

It’s normal to feel overwhelmed, frustrated, or even anxious as you move through a threshold. Instead of pushing these emotions aside, allow yourself to fully feel them. Acknowledge that they are a natural part of the process and can serve as a gateway to deeper understanding. By honoring your emotions, you create space for healing and transformation.

Trust the Process

Above all, trust that the threshold is part of your spiritual evolution. It’s easy to feel discouraged when things get tough, but remind yourself that this difficulty is temporary and will eventually lead to greater clarity and spiritual alignment. Keep faith in the process, and know that on the other side of the threshold lies a more profound connection to your true self.

Stepping into a spiritual threshold is a powerful opportunity for growth. It’s a reminder that even when life feels hard, we are being called to deepen our understanding, release what no longer serves us, and open to the divine wisdom waiting to unfold within us.
